Established
in 1886, Thieme is a major publishing force throughout Europe and
the market-leading medical and science publishing company in Germany.
Thieme is now rapidly expanding its English-language publishing activities
with an invigorated, American-based medical publishing program.
When Theime's marketing team needed an enhanced web presence for its English-language
sales and marketing efforts, they found themselves confronted by two bleak
realities; "Hot shot" New York developers wanted hundreds of
thousands for dollars for a relatively simple site, and the home office
wanted a complete online sales presence created within a pitiful budget.
The time was early 1997, and the web was still an expensive and unproven
venue for corporate niche markets.
I was contacted by my web host, who was also hosting Thieme's small brochure
site that they had developed in-house. The owner of the hosting company
was capable of handling the programming, but there was no designer. To
make matters more complicated, the company itself had no real idea of
what they wanted or needed out of a website.
I traveled to New York and, after exhaustive questioning and a close examination
of the company's operation and sales goals, provided them with a detailed
Need's Assesment Report. In this report I made suggestions for a comprehensive
web presence development schedule, designed to happen in stages that would,
ideally, be supported by upper management as the site proved itself to
be an effective tool at each stage.
Working with one programmer, I developed the current site structure that
is in place today over a period of 6 months, including the overall design,
structure and graphical elements. The site was designed to allow growth,
and it has been growing steadily since it's launch with little need for
either back-end or design revision. The company maintains the site, which
is fully dynamic, itself.
